Case Study: Nadeen - Skills Bootcamp in Pharmacy

Our ‘Bridging the Gap’ Skills Bootcamp in Pharmacy is a pharmacy specific training programme that runs for 10 weeks for 1 day per week. It gives learners an understanding of what it means to work in a pharmacy as a Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician and the role they play in pharmacies across England. As part of the programme, the Skills Bootcamp supports learners access an interview with an employer.

We recently spoke to Nadeen, she's at the beginng of her Skills Bootcamp in Pharmacy journey, she also has another job. We asked her what made her apply to the programme and how she juggles the course and her job.

Woodspeen Training (WT): What made you choose the Skills Bootcamp in Pharmacy?
Nadeen (N): I choose to do the Skills Bootcamp in Pharmacy as I thought it would be better to gain knowledge first before looking for work. Not only will this help me get my foot in the door but it will help me extend my field within pharmacy, understand my career path and show other employers my dedication.

WT: Why did you choose your course?
N: I chose my course to understand medicine. I’ve always had an interest in general science but didn’t have the opportunity to thrive within school, and doing my own research at home for biology, it can be overwhelming where to start and what to achieve. I hope I can flourish within the next coming weeks and show not only my tutors, how dependable I am but future employers as well.

WT: What do you do day-to-day?
N: I on Fridays and Saturdays I’ll plan my day around my job e.g. getting organised for work which entails, making sure my uniform is clean and crease free being appropriate for work, ensuring I’ve eaten before leaving and cooked for my partner, what time is best to travel, and parking before I can start work.

Tuesdays I have Bootcamp Pharmacy sessions and like to have everything I need before the session starts e.g. pen paper, laptop charger, and water to stay hydrated.

Wednesdays I like to get my report done for Pharmacy Bootcamp. The peace and quiet is something I appreciate.

The rest of the days, Mondays, Thursdays and Sundays, I take the time to plan what I should do whether that’ll be to look after my home, spend time with my partner, seeing family, practice self-care or research more about the field of pharmacy.

WT: What do you love about the Skills Bootcamp in Pharmacy?
N: I love how informative it is. All the tutors are very helpful, pointing me in the right direction, I feel very engaged and focused with every lesson.

WT: You have another job, how do you manage studying and working?
N: Ensuring I have balance for both, my balance includes being well rested, doing an appropriate number of breaks when needed to keep my metal energy ticking as well as eating. Being open with my employer and prioritising my future goals.

WT: What are you going to do after you’ve completed the Skills Bootcamp in Pharmacy?
N: I would like to be able to go into the dispensing field, to prepare and give medications to patients knowing the importance of the medication, such as, how the medication is to be used, what the side effects are, how to store the medication and ensuring patients understand their medication for safe practices.
